Greece remains Without formal public broadcasting for two and a half months, after the government's decision to close the ERT on June 11th. The temporary broadcaster, who was supposed to cover the needs until the establishment and organization of a new permanent body, still features only a makeshift rigged TV channel. Although the establishment and operation of a radio station is technically easier than that of a television, though the government, already two and a half months later, decided not to proceed with its creation.
Two months after the ERT switch-off by the Greek government, the employees of the former ERT remain at the forefront and continue to not recognize the interim channer and the decisions of the government. From thw Radio House of Athens, the facilities of ERT3 in Thessaloniki and most local radio services, they still produce content. The feelings are mixed: the time has passed, the forecourt of the Radio House is not full of protesters any more many former employees of ERT have disappeared, others appeared to be engaged in the lists for employment in the intermediate public channel.
We inform you that ERT employees along with supporters have initiated an international solidarity campaign, right after the announcement by EBU that the streaming of ERT signal will be discontinued on Wednesday 21st of August. The solidarity petition takes place via the website AVAAZ.org. Hundreds of citizens have already responded to this initiative, requesting, among others, from the chair of EBU, to not discontinue the support of ERT with these particular services.
An operation has been in progress since yesterday, for the shutting down of the transmitters that retransmitted analogically the programme of ERT. By “taking down” transmitters one by one, the permanent silencing of the ERT employees’ voice is being arranged. They started from Styra at Evia, they moved on to Vitsi at Florina, then followed the transmitters at Mount Pelion and Lesvos, resulting in the Aegean ERA (ERT radio station) being silenced too.
Some hours ago, the second announcement of the Ministry of Finance got issued, concerning the 1453 job positions of for the transitional public broadcaster, as ERT was closed mid June and the new fully operational broadcaster is expected from October.
