Greek government blindly extends radio licenses for a 10th year

According to the Amendment 2071/41 12.05.2014 filed in the Ministry of Infrastructure bill for transport, telecommunications and public works, the government gives itself an extension of one more year (the tenth in a row) for granting new radio station licenses, but also for completion of licensing digital broadcast content providers. The amendment xtended the relevant deadlines of December 31, 2014 until December 31, 2015.

European Commission: Nothing is wrong with the DVB-t monopoly in Greece

The issue of monopoly tactics concerning digital frequency management in Greece was raised in the European Parliament, following a question by the member of the European Parliament Kostas Chrysogonos. Mr. Chrysogonos from the Greek Left Party asked the European Commision which measures are taken to protect media freedom and healthy media competition, given that the entire TV spectrum is being managed by one single company.

Majority of Greek Broadcaster's Trust Board resigned after governmental intervention

The Supervisory Board of the Greek Broadcaster NERIT cannot function, after the resignation of Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board Andreas Zoulas, which followed the resignation of both NERIT's chiefs, Markidimitris and Moronis. The resignation was accompanied by reports of heavy government intervention in the television program, but also for the seizure of 50% of the license fee. Additionally, until further notice, the tender for the selection of the new President - CEO and other members of the Board remains blocked.

End of an era: The Greek Service of the Voice of America ceases operations

The end of operation of the Greek Service of VOA (Voice of America) after 72 years was announced yesterday by the radio network. The decision was taken due to cuts in the budget allocated for the operation of the news organization, but also due to the effort to use the broadcaster for the diplomatic needs of the United States. The last show will be aired Tuesday morning via satellite and it will be relayed to Greece by Skai Radio and City 106,1 in Thessaloniki.

Funding cuts for Cyprus' Public Broadcaster; one TV channel and one radio program may close

Public broadcasters in Europe are being hit by a wave of funding cuts. After Greece, Britain, Spain and Italy, Cyprus is about to be hit by the crisis. An analysis ordered by the Cyprus Ministry of Interior from PWC, concerning strategic, operational planning and reorganization of the CyBC is about to be published.
