Heavy downsizing has been taking place the last hours in SKAI radio station (also affecting the related TV station) which is expected to be completed by next month. The news, sports and road-traffic editorial departments are being stooped. Former news chief of Star Channer takes over as a Director of News for the whole media group, whereas music is being played again after 3 years suspension due to failure of loyalty agreements. 4 more layoffs occured at two other radio stations of the same media group, Melodia and Red, which will have to operate with only one sound engineer each.
The Greek government decided to shut down the public broadcaster ERT. Despite international outrage, big private channels in Greece supported the government’s decision through news bulletins and informative shows. And that was not all. [...] Private channel technicians were present during police operations at ERT transmitters and at first turned them off and then helped broadcast a digital signal with vertical bars through two private providers (OTE & Digea). This raises question if these private companies are in any way implicated in ERT’s shutdown. The truth is that not only are they implicated but also they played an active role, especially Digea, in a government plan aiming to obtain absolute control of the Greek broadcasting sector.
ERT engineers all around Greece have gone into the battle of turning the transmitters of television and Greek Radio back on, after the decision of the High Court, that suspends the shutdown of the public broadcaster. As one of their engineers said, the signal providers have to make the signal transfer channels to the responders. This concerns OTE, which suspended the regular line from the ERT Radio House and transferred signal by private Digea to the transmitters.
Nikos Michalitsis was removed from his post; as a technical director of ERT, he was the one who decided to establish digital radio and digital high-definition (HD) in Greece, something that clashed with private interests.
