Criminal prosecution against majour Greek media owner

A criminal prosecution for inciting infidelity felony brought by the Public Prosecutor against media owner Stavros Psycharis, for having been granted unsustainable loans that infringe the curent banking legislation. The Government Gazette published on Friday night the decision 207 B '/ 30.1.2015 by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, which defines the powers of new Minister of State Nikos Pappás. Youngsters On The Air 2015 Radio Camp Set for this Summer in Italy

The fifth Youngsters On The Air (YOTA) summer event will take place July 18-25 in Italy, organized by the Associazione Radioamatori Italiani (ARI), Italy’s International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) member society. Teams of young radio amateurs from several countries will take part in a variety of Amateur Radio activities. Attendees also will have an opportunity to learn about other cultures and sample cuisine from all participating countries.

European Commission: Nothing is wrong with the DVB-t monopoly in Greece

The issue of monopoly tactics concerning digital frequency management in Greece was raised in the European Parliament, following a question by the member of the European Parliament Kostas Chrysogonos. Mr. Chrysogonos from the Greek Left Party asked the European Commision which measures are taken to protect media freedom and healthy media competition, given that the entire TV spectrum is being managed by one single company.

Thessaloniki radio will be sailing this weekend

After the first summer party, the radio DJs of Next FM will be occupying a catamaran and sailing to the seashore of Thessaloniki. On Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 of May, from 2pm to 8pm, Next FM will be cruising on Thermaikos Gulf, and will be driven ashore to Thessaloniki on two spots in order to meet their listeners. The meeting points will be Aristotle Sq. and the White Tower. The radio people promise to combine the sun and the sea with a lot of music chosen by themselves.

Derti and Sfera radio sacked 9 out of 11 sound engineers

The administration of radio stations Sfera and Derti proceeded with the layoffs of almost all sound engineers (nine out of eleven) as they did not accept the salary cuts and restructuring of their working rights. As their union said, the administration had threatened to fire the engineers if they do not accept a salary cut of 30% and losing their institutional workers' rights, whereas at the same time, despite the financial problems, a lot of young inexperienced engineers with no workers' rights were hired as interns.

Athens municipal radio struggling to keep 70 employees and news program, as government block contract renewal

Whereas Minister of Administrative Reforms Kyriakos Mitsotakes declared that the mobility and redundancy measures have come to an end, Athens Municipal Radio is in a critical point, as the process for the renewal of the contracts of 70 employees, due tomorrow, Good Friday. If nothing is done by the Government in order to allow signing new contracts, the bells will mark Good Friday for the radio station itself, as it is going to remain with reduced personnel and be unable to transmit news content.

University journalists question transparency on the hiring of the Public Broadcaster NERIT

A tough announcement against the new Greek public broadcaster was issued by the Union of Degree-holders of the School of Journalism and Media from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, questioning the transparency and the meritocracy of the hiring procedure for journalists. NERIT was accused for not requiring journalists to have university degrees, for not using the nationwide council for hiring but going through special committees, as well as choosing chief editors directly, even if they do not have the required credits.

Employee of Greek public TV committed suicide, few months after the broadcaster switch-off

ERT family has been shocked again, as one former employee of ET3 committed suicide yesterday, jumping off the 5th floor of her appartment's balcony in Ano Toumba, Thessaloniki.

The 46-year-old woman, used to be employed in the secretary's office of the public television in an administrative position; she committed suicide yesterday at 22:33. An ambulance was called, which just ensured her death. According to information from a local website, the woman had said to her family members: "I managed to recover from my health problem, but I could not recover from the ERT switch-off".

Sound engineer and inventor Ray Dolby died

Ray Milton Dolby, died in the age of 88 in 12th September 2013. He was an American engineer and inventor of the noise reduction system known as Dolby NR. He was also a co-inventor of video tape recording while at Ampex. He was the founder of Dolby Laboratories. He was also a billionaire and a member of the Forbes 400 with an estimated net worth of US$2.9 billion in 2008.

Greek public radio honours the World Radio Day

The radio stations of all local radio stations of Greek Public Radio are hosting features for the World Radio day. Referring to the history of the stations, including interviews and memories, the local radios are remembering the long history of the public radio service in the countryside and honour its offer to the listeners and the land. Listeners' phonecalls, talking about their relationship with the radio are also being aired.

Antenna radio lost its nationwide coverage

As we had predicted, the identity and profile change of the former news radio of Antenna, had a negative effect on the radio coverage of the group in the countryside. The program of Antenna FM used to be relayed in the countryside via the frequences of a 25 "networked" radio stations. Many of these stations had a long history in this cooperation, whereas some of them had also chosen to use the name of Antenna for their frequency.

Radio station owner called the police to prevent anarchists' intervention

This incident took place some time ago at the center of Thessaloniki, when a group of young people tried to enter the studio of Radio Thessaloniki, which is being hosted in a little house, part of the Christmas decoration at Aristotélous Square; Stéfanos Diamantópoulos was there. Betting commercials on the Greek sports radio to be restricted again

A significant deprivation of revenue for the sports radio is expected to come as a result of the new law, which prohibits the transmission of advertisements by unlicensed betting companies. Specifically, the law 4002/2011 banned "commercial communications for gambling except for companies to be authorized by the Greek state." Radio station of Thessaloniki football club on strike for more than 80 days

The radio station employees of Aris FM have been on strike since 80 days already. The sports radio station is controlled by Touronis group which has been facing severe facing financial problems, which resulted in the seizure of the entire equipment of Star FM, about a month ago. The technicians on strike are seeking payment of all debts (wages - Easter Bonus 2012) and ending of the lack of insurance for some of their colleagues.

District municipal radio of Athens to officially cease operations

The final end of Xenios Radio was confirmed at the meeting of Tuesday (26/06) by the City Council of Phili. The decision included the clearance the municipal radio station, after defining 3 trustees (of whom one is known, former purger the station, Mr. George Nikitakis) and transfering the radio station personnel to the municipality and the legal entities of Phili (with contracts for Institutions of Local Administration), at the request of the employees concerned.

Explosion outside local radio station of Northern Greece

An arson attack with gas explosives occurred in the early hours of Friday, June 29 at the entrance of the radio station "Diavlos Rhodopis" in Komotini. An improvised explosive device was placed by unknown ones at the entrance of the building at the intersection of Zimvrakakidon and Themidos streets, where the radio station is based. It consisted of a gas bottle, on the edge of which a piece of cloth soaked with flammable material was attached. The explosion resulted in a minor fire which caused a slight damage to the entrance of the station, without being spread inside the offices.

Local Greek radio offers vegetable garden to its listeners

Radio Thessaloniki has made a constant effort to keep in touch with the social life of the city, via a series of "social compaigns", including blood donations, tree planting, cleaning marathons, collective literature writing contests etc. Though, the latest idea of the station is way more interesting than the previous ones: in times of high prices, when many Greeks dream of having "their little vegetable garden", Radio Thessaloniki is offering its garden to the listeners, so that they take care of it and plant vegetables.

Municipal radio of Volos is ceasing operation

After twenty years of operation, Volos Municipal Radio prepares to silence in the coming months, after the dissolution of the body and the liquidation of its assets. The decision is expected to be taken by the Volos Municipal Council, which meets at noon on Friday.

Reactions against reduction of relay frequencies for Public Radio of Pyrgos

The reopening of the 103.7 relay frequency so that the Public Radio of Pyrgos (South West Greece) can be heard in all areas of Ilia, demands MP of the Democratic Alliance for Ilia Prefecture, George Kontoyannis, in a Parliamentary Question to the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Networks . "The Research and Technology Department of ERT ordered the closure of specific relaying frequencies in the Greek countryside including the frequency 103.7 of the Public Radio of Pyrgos.

Illegal radio station seized, owner arrested in Larissa

A 45-year-old man was arrested in Elassona, Larissa, Central Greece for operating an illegal radio station. In particular, officers of the Police Department conducted a search in Elassona, on a settlement in a rural area of Elassona where they found and seized electronic devices and components thereof, installed in order to transmit on a certain frequency (92.5), which has not been legally approved for a radio station transmission in Larissa. During the investigation the 45-year-old man appeared in the area, as the owner of the illegal radio station and was arrested.
