A significant deprivation of revenue for the sports radio is expected to come as a result of the new law, which prohibits the transmission of advertisements by unlicensed betting companies. Specifically, the law 4002/2011 banned "commercial communications for gambling except for companies to be authorized by the Greek state." As published by "Typologies", the first problems are to be seen soon, as for example in Sentra FM and "Goal News" where group-wide revenues in the balance sheets are 3.46% and from betting advertising on 0,73%. The problems in other sports radio stations will be similar, since a large part of their income comes from 'offshore', Greek-speaking websites which sponsor many sports radio shows.
The difference to the status a few years ago, when advertising of any company apart for the state bookmakers OPAP was illigial, is that now companies that have acquired (and paid) a license will be able to take out ads on the air of sports radio stations.
