7 Greek regional public radio stations are closing, rest to operate with 4 people each

Some hours ago, the second announcement of the Ministry of Finance got issued, concerning the 1453 job positions of for the transitional public broadcaster, as ERT was closed mid June and the new fully operational broadcaster is expected from October. While the first announcement had left many open questions about the intentions for the Greek Public Radio, this piece of news is quite enlightening as it clearly defines the number of employees at the regional radio stations. According to the list, local radio stations of Kalamata, Volos, Zakynthos, Kavala, Pyrgos, Serres and Chania will be closed. Each of the remaining radio stations will have to operate with only one reporter, between one and two technicians and possibly a music producer and a director.

Although nothing has been announced for the new Broadcasting which will begin in the fall, this announcement for the next two months is not promising for the regional radio stations, since there is no indication that they would increase their staff in the future. With the exception of Thrace and northwestern Greece, reducing stations resembles the cuts planned two yeard ago by Mossialos (marked with blue lines on the map).

The announcement raises questions about how a local radio station can operate with only one music producer and just one reporter. Apart from a journalist and a music producer / editor per station, staff includes:

Mytilene: two technicians, no administrative

Heraklion: 1 journalist, 1 administrator

Ioannina: 1 technician, 1 administrator

Corfu:  2 technicians, 1 administrator

Kozani: 2 technicians, 1 administrator

Komotini: 2 technicians, 1 administrator

Larissa: 2 technicians, 1 administrator,

Orestiada 3 technicians, no administrative

Patras: 2 technicians, 1 administrator

Rhodes: 2 technicians, 1 administrator

Tripolis:  2 technicians, 1 administrator

Florina: 2 technicians, 1 administrator

In the field of transponders, permanent staff maintain broadcast centers Alexandroupolis, Kavala, Kastoria, Hortiati, Corfu Akarnanika, Mytilene, Rhodes Gerania and Crete (Heraklion / Chania).
