Greek Parliament approved re-establishing public broadcaster ERT

The Greek Parliament approved at 1.20 am yesterday the law for re-establishing the public broadcaster ERT, that had been shut down in June 2013 by the leading conservative party at that time. The decision was applaused by a number of former employess of ERT who were watching the parliamentary discussion.

Most powerful Greek Radio transmitter looted by burglars after having been abandoned

Destruction of the allegedly most powerful medium wave transmitter of the Greek public broadcasting Service was reported during the Christmas holidays, few days after the power disruption ordered by the administrators of the estate of former ERT who reside in Athens. As reported by the local press, the burglars took advantage of the interruption of transmitions, invaded the transmitter facilities in Kalithea Rhodes and took loot. They stole all precious metal of the transmitter and its facilities, the cost of which exceeds EUR 100,000.

EBU does not recognize the Greek Public Broadcaster as a member yet

The executives of EBU who were in Athens for a meeting with NERIT administration yesterday have not been convinced that the new Greek Public Broadcaster is in full operation. Therefore, EBU has not accepted yet the request of NERIT to be a full member of the union of public broadcasters in Europe.

One majour issues, is that NERIT has not yet succeeded to hire more than 25 personnel, whereas the rest of the content is still produced by the interim broadcaster set up last September by the Ministry of Finances.

CEO of new public Greek broadcaster dismissed; nothing worked as expected

Edit: New CEO of Greek public broadcaster NERIT will be Antonis Makridimitris, Professor of Management at the University of Athens. The new public broadcaster of Greece has got into new adventures, as the dismissal of the CEO Giorgos Prokopakis has been announced. He has been accused for the absolute failure to have a "clean start" for the new broadcaster, as in the end the interim governmental service "DT" is extending its operation, with the only difference that the logos and the websites have been slightly tweaked.

University journalists question transparency on the hiring of the Public Broadcaster NERIT

A tough announcement against the new Greek public broadcaster was issued by the Union of Degree-holders of the School of Journalism and Media from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, questioning the transparency and the meritocracy of the hiring procedure for journalists. NERIT was accused for not requiring journalists to have university degrees, for not using the nationwide council for hiring but going through special committees, as well as choosing chief editors directly, even if they do not have the required credits.

Disappointment as new public broadcaster of Greece starts with only 356 employes

The Greek Ministry of Finances agreed with the Ministry of Public Broadcasting to transfer the interim broadcaster, along with the entire personnel under the administration of the new broadcaster NERIT. The employees of the interim broadcaster will remain for a limited time and hand over to the personnel of NERIT which will go on with the program.

Employee of Greek public TV committed suicide, few months after the broadcaster switch-off

ERT family has been shocked again, as one former employee of ET3 committed suicide yesterday, jumping off the 5th floor of her appartment's balcony in Ano Toumba, Thessaloniki.

The 46-year-old woman, used to be employed in the secretary's office of the public television in an administrative position; she committed suicide yesterday at 22:33. An ambulance was called, which just ensured her death. According to information from a local website, the woman had said to her family members: "I managed to recover from my health problem, but I could not recover from the ERT switch-off".

Rush to air one Greek Public Radio, ahead of the High Court on Friday

Greek government ordered the heads of the "interim" broadcaster to air one public radio service by the end of the week, as the High Court will be discussing the issue of ERT switch-off on Friday. According to an article by enikos.gr, it is expected that one public radio station will start operating on Thursday featuring news and sports, merging the format of former 1st Radio Service and ERA Sport.
