Athens radio owners block the transfer of bankrupt stations to the employees

The agenda of the plenary session of the Greek National Broadcasting Council (ESR) today included the application of the unpaid employees of news Flash radio, who want to acquire its frequency, as it is suggested by a recent law about bankrupt radio stations. According a report by Vassilis Koufopoulos, the Union of Owners of Private Radio Stations of Attica (EIIRA) intervened and asked to speak to the Council, which has been scheduled for next week. The owners seem to block such moves. The law indeed allows to a big part of the unpaid employees to apply for taking the ownership of their radio stations; we are still looking forward to seeing the legal basis for the appeal by EIIRA.

Meanwhile, ESR seems to be sceptical about the claim that part of the employees had no information about the petition and the motion by the 34 applicants, which is also possible to block the process, according to E-tetradio.gr.

According the same source, the other two bankrupt frequencies of Athens (Best FM and VFM) are to by sold through an auction by the National Bank of Greece. The first process at March 27th was unsuccessful as nobody was interested to pay 1,6 Million Euros for Best FM and 1,2 Euros for VFM 88,3. The next auction had been scheduled for yesterday and we are waiting to hear the news. The employees of both radio stations have also applied for being granted the frequency, through the transfer process by ESR.
