After twenty years of operation, Volos Municipal Radio prepares to silence in the coming months, after the dissolution of the body and the liquidation of its assets. The decision is expected to be taken by the Volos Municipal Council, which meets at noon on Friday.
Yesterday afternoon, Mayor of Volos and Chairman of the Special Purpose Enterprise for the Municipal Radio, Panos Skotiniotis invited at the Municipal Council the Directors of the Company and the employees of the Municipal Radio.
Mr. Skotiniotis informed them of the failure of his efforts to get an approval on transferring the activities of the radio company to the City, based on the latest law bundle - concerning local government that passed a fortnight ago, just before the dissolution of Parliament.
The relevant article of the law, Article 11 provides that the City may take over the debts of the Special Purpose Enterprise. No provision, however, under the same Article, concerns the transfer of personnel and the radio responsibilities to the municipality. The Mayor of Volos talking to employees and directors Municipal Corporation of them pointed out that the transfer of staff is not an issue for the Public Radio Volos, as from September 27, 2011 they have already been transferred to the main municipality.
Namely four sound engineers, four reporters and one administrator. All of them with a permanent contract.
It was announced that the Municipal Radio debts amount to 412,615 euros, of which 320,917 euros are liabilities to the State and insurance funds, 67,435 euros are unpaid salaries to the staff until September 27 when they were transferred to the municipality, 22,984 euros in payment earnings to external partners of the radio and 1.298 euros are owed to suppliers.
Following the decision of the City Council a liquidator will be appointed for the dissolution of the Company, and it is being investigated whether the frequency of Radio City can stay or not as a property of the municipality. In addition, the Municipal Authority is considering whether instead of the conventional frequency to FM, the Municipal Radio continues to broadcast its program through the Internet.
