The merger of the two major Greek TV channels Mega and Star is going ahead. According to information published by "Paron" newspaper, their respective owners Psicharis and Bobolas have decided to go further with the proposal for merging the two TV stations into one single company, which will operate both channels, maintaining both of their frequencies. Given that the legislation for the media will change and that the Committee for Market Competition does not disapprove, Mega Channel will proceed with a similar content, including news reports, (a few) entertainment shows and Greek series, while Star Channel will revert to a movies channel, including only two news flashes a day.
The high cost for operating the two stations has been considered to be the main reason for the merger, combined with the huge decrease of advertising expenditure. Star Channel has a plan for many redundancies in the near future, including cuts at the morning shows; cuts are expected for the morning shows of Mega, which is expected to cut 3 working days per month and per employee, so that they can save their positions.
