The possible reopening of the municipal radio station of Kavala has been being examined for the last month by the City Council of Kavala, after a proposal by Mayor C. Simitsis. A solution was proposed to assign the operation of the station to a private body, but it caused "doubts about the transparency on using an asset of the municipality. Please note that the radio has been a "living dead" ten years now.
According to local press, the initial proposal of the mayor of Kavala focused on a particular publisher (and former owner of a private short-range radio station) who had expressed interest in taking over the program of the Municipal Radio Station. Indeed, the possibility of a direct assignment was raised, but was subsequently withdrawn. The topic had been introduced for discussion in the form of emergency as claimed by the opposition, sought to retire and return as a regular in the Tuesday's meeting (1st of June), a proposal that eventually was accepted by the Mayor Costis Simitsis. Eventually, the matter was referred for consideration by the Cultural Committee of the City Council.
Given the tight budget of the municipality, the severe opposition and a shift of the mayor himself, the local press is predicting the possibility that the proposal will be deferred until... the future.
