After the first summer party, the radio DJs of Next FM will be occupying a catamaran and sailing to the seashore of Thessaloniki. On Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 of May, from 2pm to 8pm, Next FM will be cruising on Thermaikos Gulf, and will be driven ashore to Thessaloniki on two spots in order to meet their listeners. A tough announcement against the new Greek public broadcaster was issued by the Union of Degree-holders of the School of Journalism and Media from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, questioning the transparency and the meritocracy of the hiring procedure for journalists. NERIT was accused for not requiring journalists to have university degrees, for not using the nationwide council for hiring but going through special committees, as well as choosing chief editors directly, even if they do not have the required credits. The operation of the shortwave services installed in Avlida is going on under the responsibility of the redundant employees of ERT. The latter remain active and produce their own program, as they do not accept the decision of the government to shut down ERT. They have also started legal processes to declare the closure illegal. After having been forcefully evicted from the Radio House, they now rent on their own expenses a radio studio, right across the street of the Radio House. ERT family has been shocked again, as one former employee of ET3 committed suicide yesterday, jumping off the 5th floor of her appartment's balcony in Ano Toumba, Thessaloniki.
The 46-year-old woman, used to be employed in the secretary's office of the public television in an administrative position; she committed suicide yesterday at 22:33. An ambulance was called, which just ensured her death. According to information from a local website, the woman had said to her family members: "I managed to recover from my health problem, but I could not recover from the ERT switch-off". "Sto Kokkino", the radio station of the Greek political party SYRIZA seems to be preparing to expand its coverage to Thessaloniki soon, by having a frequency to be aired all around the region of Central Macedonia. The Thessaloniki press office of the main oposition party seems to have reached an advanced level of negociations for a deal on using an existing local frequency. The new radio station will have an autonomous local news slot of several hours, whereas, as expected, the program from Athens will also be relayed. A great discussion for the present and the future of radio was held on Sunday in Thessaloniki, in the frame of the first Radio Awards, organized by research center Noesis. This incident took place some time ago at the center of Thessaloniki, when a group of young people tried to enter the studio of Radio Thessaloniki, which is being hosted in a little house, part of the Christmas decoration at Aristotélous Square; Stéfanos Diamantópoulos was there. As he mentioned, there was some tension and he had to call the police, as he did not want to let them be on air, under such conditions. The radio station employees of Aris FM have been on strike since 80 days already. The sports radio station is controlled by Touronis group which has been facing severe facing financial problems, which resulted in the seizure of the entire equipment of Star FM, about a month ago. The technicians on strike are seeking payment of all debts (wages - Easter Bonus 2012) and ending of the lack of insurance for some of their colleagues. Radio Thessaloniki has made a constant effort to keep in touch with the social life of the city, via a series of "social compaigns", including blood donations, tree planting, cleaning marathons, collective literature writing contests etc. Though, the latest idea of the station is way more interesting than the previous ones: in times of high prices, when many Greeks dream of having "their little vegetable garden", Radio Thessaloniki is offering its garden to the listeners, so that they take care of it and plant vegetables. The Executive Board of ERT, during its No. 1040 meeting, reviewed, on the recommendation of the relevant DG, the issue of disruption of three medium wave transmitters at the Greek Radio Broadcast Centers at Megara, Malgara and Tripoli.
