On Friday, at 11 am, I received the call I had been waiting for a long time by the Director of the newspaper. He invited me to his office, where he told me that "he regrets having to announce this". He did not tell me what he exactly regrets and I did not bother to get him out of that, by flagging what he regrets. He then told me that himself, he does not really want me to leave the newspaper and that he is very sorry. I consoled him cheerlessly for this unfortunate situation. Heavy downsizing has been taking place the last hours in SKAI radio station (also affecting the related TV station) which is expected to be completed by next month. The news, sports and road-traffic editorial departments are being stooped. Former news chief of Star Channer takes over as a Director of News for the whole media group, whereas music is being played again after 3 years suspension due to failure of loyalty agreements. 4 more layoffs occured at two other radio stations of the same media group, Melodia and Red, which will have to operate with only one sound engineer each. The employees of the Greek Church Radio were shocked yesterday to watch what was going on at their radio station. The administration of the station, after futile attempts to proceed with an arbitrary cut on the wages and without any concern, decided unexpectedly to suspend the station's operation. The Greek Public Radio (ERT) and TV and the Athenian/Macedonian Press Agency (APA/MPA) have been included in the list of the Greek public organisations that are expected to reduce their personnel by 10% immediately, by identifying them as "labour redundancy". Given a first estimation, the ERT is expected to lose around 380 employees during the first phase of the reform. The administration of each organisation has two weeks' time in order to devise a list of the employees to be sacked. The ones who have met the retirement age and those who have low qualifications (primary or secondary education) will be the first ones in the list. In case these employees don't amount up to the desired 10%, employees with general administrative tasks and employees in departments of administrative support and secretariats will follow. 16 employees were sacked yesterday in Alafouzos Group (Skai TV, Skai Radio, Melodia FM, Red FM, Play FM). The decision included 10 technicians, 4 administrative employees and the 2 producers Harris Hadjistefanou (Skai) and Olga Laskaratou (Melodia 99.2). "Reduced program needs" was given as a reason for the cuts. Hadjistefanou was one of the few who had refused to sign the "voluntary" 10% salary reduction imposed by the administration of Skai.
