Two "free radios" of Athens under attack

Two non-commercial stations of Athens with political content and the news website Athens Indymedia are threatened with repression. According an announcement by 98FM, the Public Prosecutor has put pressure, resulting into the interruption of the internet connection of 98FM (93.8 FM) and Athens Indymedia, whereas Radio Entasi 100.1 has unexpectedly interrupted transmissions. The collectives call for a manifestation on Friday April 12th at 1pm, at the Central University Campus Square of Zografou. (Bus access: 608 from Academia, 242 from Katechaki station). It is ironic, that whereas these two radio stations, that call for freedom of expression, are being shut, the nearby commercial transmitters at 98 and 100.6 MHz are still operating, unaffected by the the "sensible" Public Prosecutor.

According the announcement: "Three of the counter-information media of the resistance movement, athens.indymedia.org, 98FM and Radio Entasi, have been victims of the state repression since the noon of Thursday, April 11th. The internet connection was cut, after pressure by the Public Prosecutor."

The announcement of the assembly goes on: "During a period when the entire society can hardly breath, due to the financial, political and social repression, the smaller or bigger local resistances, the smaller or bigger workers' struggles, are recreational and hopeful and are the ones which transfer the sparkle of the revolution, inspire and seed the subsersive and radical ideas in order to demolish the world of exploitation one and for all... Exactly at this moment, and just because the real terrorists are afraid of the social resistance, the authority tries to impose the communication obscurantism of the mainstream media. Muting and repressing the counter-media won't remain in the hidden columns of their newspapers and their channels. Our response will overtake the ridiculous celebrations of the fascists and the authoritarians. The counter-media are our own media, the voice of our own struggles which show the way to build the world we want."

The conservative MP of the governmental party, Adonis Georgiadis, expressed via Twitter his satisfaction for the action, praising Minister of Civil Order Nikos Dendias.
