The Greek Telecommunications Commission (EETT) charged a huge fine to a local radio station of Mytilene, Lesbos, as it changed frequency in order not to receive interference from a powerful station based in Turkey. Also, despite the complex geographical topography of the island, the station was not excused for using a second transmitter to broadcast to other areas.
Following an announcement of the station on their Facebook page, starting from noon of Sunday, March 31, the POP FM is moving from 98.6 to 101.3 MHz. They also wave farewell to the town of Kalloni and nearby villages, who received at 98.8, as that transmitter has to shut down permanently. The National Telecommunications Commission imposed a fine of 19,000 euros to POP FM because they chose to not interfere with the Turkish radio station set at 101.3 and changed their frequency to 98.6. Meanwhile, POP FM has been asked to stop the broadcast to the rest of the island because it is illegal to use a second tranmitter to cover the county, although with only one transmitter at Mount Prophetes Elias, Mytilene they can only cover the city. "We will forcefully move to 101.3, suffer interference from Turkish RADYO-7 and also pay the fine," said the station managers.
EETT's decision is based on aged legislation, according to which radio stations are allowed to transmit in frequencies which had been arbitrarily chosen before 1999, without any consideration or study about the geographical parameters and interference from neighboring states. The legislation does not provide any procedure to change the frequency due to external factors, nor permit (with the exception of Athens/Attica) using multiple tranmission sites in order to achieve coverage of the entire county due to a tricky geographical terrain. This situation has created many problems to the provincial radio, causing frustration to owners who constantly face such an absurd legislation.
