Steadily reduced international programs by the Voice of Greece

The multilingual service of Voice of Greece (ERA5) on shortwave has been severely decreased during the last months. The summer schedule, which has been running from March and will continue until October, contains 4 international broadcasts of 3 hours daily in English, French, German and Russian. It actually broadcasts 2 fewer services than the previous semester, when it also featured two more programs, in Albanian and Italian, resulting into a multilingual program of 5 hours altogether.

In any case, the number of languages has been sharply reduced, compared with previous years, when it broadcasted news in Arabic, Bulgarian, Spanish, Polish, Romanian, Serbo-Croat and Turkish.

ERA5 airs its multilingual program jointly with Radio Filia, which is addressed to international residents in Greece. The frequencies used for the broadcast include 11645 KHz on the shortwave, 666 KHz on the mediumwave and 106.7 FM in Athens. Unfortunately, the transmitter of 666 KHz which broadcasts 24/7 (as opposed to the shortwave) has sufficient coverage only over central Greece, while the former frequency of 792 KHz covering northern Greece and the Balkans, has been granted since 5 years to ERA Sport. The foreign language program of the ERA5 has been targeted only towards Europe. The rest of the continents can only receive its Greek-speaking service targeted to Greeks abroad.
