An appeal to the Greek government to reconsider its decision to abolish the Third Service (shortwave) of the Radio Station of Macedonia ERT-3 has been sent by the Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE), while calling for the strengthening and enrichment of all programs of Greek Radio and Television that appeal to the Greek Diaspora.
"The establishment of the Third Programme (shortwave) Radio Station of Macedonia ERT-3, addressed to Greeks abroad since 1952, coincided with the great emigration from northern Greece across the globe and has been for many decades a possibility of bridging with the homeland, but also one of the few means of reliable and timely updates on the happenings in Greece" the announcement of the SAE continues: "The Third Service was a supporter in the effort to consolidate the Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) during its inception in 1995. With direct links, features, special programs and interviews, gave expression to representatives of diaspora unions and organizations, to prominent expatriates from around the world and in every Greek person abroad".
Furthermore, it must be noted that all these years, the shortwave service ERT-3 has developed a deep trust relationship with the Diaspora, all around the world, and has given the opportunity of access to the news to even the first generation of expatriates, including who do not have the knowledge to use technology and informatics.
"It is clear that the development of new forms of communication should not lead to the exclusion of groups who have no access to them," says SAE. "We believe that Thessaloniki, the capital of Hellenes Abroad, as proclaimed by all Greek governments, is entitled to have its own voice to the Diaspora Hellenism and the possibility of keeping Hellenism directly informed about events that are of their immediate interest and take place in the city".
