The licenses of the biggest Greek radio and TV stations reached their expiration, as 2010 comes to an end. It is the licenses of the Athens radio stations and TV channels licensed in 2001, which expired in 2003. Following the legislation, licenses must be reviewed after their expiration, according to several criteria, including whether the owners comply with the conditions under which the licenses were granted.
So far, Greek governments, unable to initiate a new licensing process, have already declared 7 consequent extensions of all existing licenses, within quickly-drafted acts. What is important, is the fact that within these 7 years, many radio stations have considerably altered the content of their program, often breaking the conditions under which the license was granted; though, at the moment there is no official process to control such situations.
An answer has to be given by the Ministry of Press, since a further extension cannot be granted, given the decision of the Council of State, which ruled that current status of operation is illegal and unconstitutional.
