The degradation of Greek Radio is going on, having shortwave radio "Voice of Greece" as a victim. This includes 39 shortwave antenna masts hosted in Avlis, which the government plans to sell as scrap metal. The shortwave service started 75 years ago and it is still transmitting in 5 frequencies that cover the globe with shows in Greek for expatriates and foreign language news. The facilities are currently controlled by redundant ERT employes and broadcast the guerilla service of the Greek National Radio ERA. Eighteen months ago, shortwave facilities in Thessaloniki were dismantled.
The Executive Board of ERT, during its No. 1040 meeting, reviewed, on the recommendation of the relevant DG, the issue of disruption of three medium wave transmitters at the Greek Radio Broadcast Centers at Megara, Malgara and Tripoli.
"The Board, taking into account the demands of local communities, the broad range they offer to the Greek Radio, and the fact that their operation is possible with reduced budget, decided to restart the operation the specific transmitters."
The mediumwave/shortwave transmission settlement of the Radio Station of Macedonia, in Perea, is being dismantled rapidly, following decision for partial mediumwave switch-off and liquidation of the real estate. At the moment, the shortwave equipment has been fully dismantled, whereas the shortwave aerials and the mediumwave equipment remains to be removed next.
Thessaloniki public radio fares medium-wave well and forever, as the historical transmitter of Perea, relaying the 102FM service of ERT3 on 1044 Khz, switched off for good. The medium-wave broadcast of 9.58FM at Malgara was switched off a bit earlier, on the 22nd of February. The aforetime powerful transmitter of Perea is currently being dismantled and disassembled and its pieces are going to be used as replacement parts for transmitters of the same type which will keep broadcasting. Meanwhile, the rest of the equipment is to be removed from the estate, which is being cleared and according to newspaper reports [GRreporter] is one of the cherished pieces of land that are about to be given to the Fund for the State Property Development in order to be sold.
After a meeting on February 17, the Administrative Board of the Greek Public Broadcaster (ERT) ordered the switch-off of eleven medium wave transmitters (MW) whereas only nine medium wave transmitters with their respective programs of the Greek Public Radio will keep operating. As it can been seen in the tables and the map below, in fact it is the high-power transmitters that survive, most of which are located near the border and had been used previously for the "International Network of ERA". Additionally ERT retains the frequency of the “First Radio Service” (729) and “Filía” (666) from Attica, and also the one of ERA Sport (792) hosted by the former Voice of America transmitter that was re-installed in 2002 at Malgara. A relatively low power transmitter in Florina will also be retained, probably because of its location being nearby to the FYROM.
