Medium-wave transmitters of Thessaloniki switched off forever

Thessaloniki public radio fares medium-wave well and forever, as the historical transmitter of Perea, relaying the 102FM service of ERT3 on 1044 Khz, switched off for good. The medium-wave broadcast of 9.58FM at Malgara was switched off a bit earlier, on the 22nd of February.

The aforetime powerful transmitter of Perea is currently being dismantled and disassembled and its pieces are going to be used as replacement parts for transmitters of the same type which will keep broadcasting. Meanwhile, the rest of the equipment is to be removed from the estate, which is being cleared and according to newspaper reports [GRreporter] is one of the cherished pieces of land that are about to be given to the Fund for the State Property Development in order to be sold.

Cuts lead Greek Public Radio to a partial medium-wave switch-off

After a meeting on February 17, the Administrative Board of the Greek Public Broadcaster (ERT) ordered the switch-off of eleven medium wave transmitters (MW) whereas only nine medium wave transmitters with their respective programs of the Greek Public Radio will keep operating. As it can been seen in the tables and the map below, in fact it is the high-power transmitters that survive, most of which are located near the border and had been used previously for the "International Network of ERA". Additionally ERT retains the frequency of the “First Radio Service” (729) and “Filía” (666) from Attica, and also the one of ERA Sport (792) hosted by the former Voice of America transmitter that was re-installed in 2002 at Malgara. A relatively low power transmitter in Florina will also be retained, probably because of its location being nearby to the FYROM.

Greek public broadcaster reduces personnel by 10%

The Greek Public Radio (ERT) and TV and the Athenian/Macedonian Press Agency (APA/MPA) have been included in the list of the Greek public organisations that are expected to reduce their personnel by 10% immediately, by identifying them as "labour redundancy". Given a first estimation, the ERT is expected to lose around 380 employees during the first phase of the reform. The administration of each organisation has two weeks' time in order to devise a list of the employees to be sacked. The ones who have met the retirement age and those who have low qualifications (primary or secondary education) will be the first ones in the list. In case these employees don't amount up to the desired 10%, employees with general administrative tasks and employees in departments of administrative support and secretariats will follow. Planned merger of Thessaloniki public radio yields unclear profit

One of the unique radio stations of the Greek radio spectrum will also be victim of the Troikan requirement for "mergers of public organizations" and generalized fanaticism against the public sector. While ERT3 generally "got away" as a result of pressure by local "stakeholders", the second service of Macedonia Radio Station, cultural radio of Thessaloniki 9.58fm, along with the short-wave service, were to fall victims of an unfortunate merger. The merger remains unjustified and blurred, with no feasibility study on the benefits and without a any strategic vision of the overall profile of the (resulting) ERT3 radio.
